With a wine-growing area of 110 hectares, Bürgerspital wine-growing estate, at home in a fantastically beautiful courtyard right in the middle of Würzburg, is one of the largest wine-growing estates in Germany and one of the most important. The estate’s formidable tradition, the wonderful vineyards in their splendid locations, the fecund nature of the soil, the climate – all this goes to make up a very unique quality.

The present-day wine-growers and vintners will also be mentioned in the chronicles of Bürgerspital as their predecessors were. What an incentive this represents to make a name for oneself for all time! And what pleasure to have great vines grow and wines mature under such conditions! The slopes and steep sides of the hills along the River Main offer simply ideal conditions for growing wine. The sun smiles upon the vineyards even early in the year, the Muschelkalk soil storing the warmth. The vines enjoy protracted vegetation. Over 90 hectares of these vineyards are located within Würzburg’s boundaries, of these, 28 hectares on the world-famous, sun-spoiled Würzburger Stein. Steep vineyards of 50 or 60 per cent are seldom to be found. The location, the soil, the climate, the proximity to the river, the shrewd selection of the types of vine.
