The estate: family estate established since 1744, altogether 30 ha of vineyards, 12 ha devoted to the Picpoul. Domaine Gaujal hails from Pinet itself, and is now run by Laurent Gaujal who succeeded his father in 2013. The name Picpoul derives from the French “Picque”, meaning sharp, and poul, meaning lips, translating as “lip stinger”.
Grape varietal and terroir: 100% Picpoul (also Piquepoul) grows on soils containing a max of 54% pure limestone, the rest being calcareous clay. The vines are on average 45 years old, cared for the traditional way: goblet pruning, ploughing of the soil.
Tasting: white flowers aromas, pear flavours and citrus zest, full in mouth with a lingering fresh finish; finesse and smoothness are key features of Cuvée Ludovic Gaujal. Food pairing: white meat fish, seafood platters: shellfish, white meats, also green asparagus.
